Right after reading Nathan Pettijohn’s opinion on his essay Can We Just Work From Home Forever? (Pettijohn, 2020) It has been brought to my attention that he is absolutely correct, I would love to work from home forever. However, as Nathan mentioned, unfortunately not all business can be performed from home. On one hand, we have businesses such as real state, hardware technicians, security, government institutions, deliveries, agriculture, factories, and many others that must be performed on their site. Also, some administrative positions, such as management, might have few days of work from home, but not most of them. On the other hand, there are business that can be easily performed from home, Forbes released an article by Jeff Rose of the best ten companies to work from home, having Appen in the first place, Lionbridge on the second place and VIPKID on the third place. Moreover, it even includes Concentrix, one well known call center, which one might think it must be performed at the office, but not necessarily. In my own experience, I work as a quality lead in IBM for a line of technical support, and I had lost my hope that we would receive any opportunity to work from home, however we were lucky enough to be given with the opportunity to work from home with no big impact in our daily operation; we have even received more positive feedback. However, this decision, if one business is able to be performed at home or not, must be first taken into consideration by their management team. Secondly, analyzed if every task must be performed on site, such as a hardware technician compared to a software technician, and finally finding a way through technology to have it done remotely. To conclude, it is a decision taken by the needs of every company, however I consider myself lucky enough to have the amazing opportunity to work from home.
